Management team (Equipe de direction)
The management of ECOSYS is ensured by a management team made up of the Unit Director (Enrique Barriuso) and the heads of the 3 scientific teams. The management team was renewed during the five-year period following the creation of the new Eco&Phy team (for which Benjamin Loubet is responsible, replacing Michaël Chelle and Benoit Gabrielle, who were responsible for the Plant Ecophysiology and Bioclimatology teams, respectively, from 2013 until setting up of the new ECOSYS unit in January 2015), with Christian Mougin being replaced by Isabelle Lamy as head of the Ecotox team in 2016, while Pierre Benoit remained in charge of the Soil team for the entire five-year period. The management team meets every two weeks, with the possibility of holding open meetings depending on the topics covered. These meetings conduct decision-making for all questions concerning the strategy and orientations of the unit, the management of human and financial resources and the practical organization of the life of the unit. A report is systematically produced, distributed to the whole unit and archived (internal document management service).The general principles and operating ethics of the management team can be summarized as follows:
- Increase the degree of autonomy of the staff, with a focus on monitoring individual courses.
- Stimulate openness, encouraging contacts and discussions both internally and externally and contributing to the creation of a stimulating environment, particularly in the context of supra-unit operations (see point 2, “Unit’s environment”).
- Promote the flow of information with the implementation of communication and information sharing tools, including a weekly electronic newsletter (ECOSYS-Hebdo), implementation of file sharing and archiving tools.
- Ensure the transparency of decision-making mechanisms, with collegiate internal functioning and systematization of the reports.
- Generalize functioning by project and mobilize internal skills in collective projects.
- Mutualize technical and experimental devices and support activities, by continuing to professionalize them and by identifying human resources.
- Increase collective involvement through statutory structures (Management Committee, Unit Council) and technical and thematic groups and clarify delegations by means of mission letters.
Management Committee (Comité de direction)
This committee is a non-statutory structure to which the managing team confers the strategic roles of (1) follow-up of the unit project; (2) strategic analysis of opportunities (calls, setting up of the projects), the design of the internal training plan, the planning of skills renewals and recruitments, and the follow-up of the technical infrastructure; (3) strategic analysis of the partnership; and (4) preparation for unit renewal.This committee is composed of (names at the time of the implementation of ECOSYS in 2015) the management team (Enrique Barriuso, Michaël Chelle, Christian Mougin, Pierre Benoit, Benoit Gabrielle), the heads of technical groups (Chemistry - Marjolaine Deschamps, Biology - Nathalie Cheviron, Biophysics - Patricia Laville), the managers of transversal axes (Recycling - Sabine Houot, Biodiversity - Mickaël Hedde, Climat - Benjamin Loubet, Filtering - Isabelle Lamy, Integration - Patricia Garnier), and two project managers: Partnership and valorization - Laurent Huber, and Teaching and Training - Claire Chenu. This committee meets every six months.
Unit Council (Conseil d’unité)
This council is statutory, but the direction of the unit is free to propose its composition while safeguarding the principle of representation of all staffs of the unit. The Council consists of 14 elected individuals representing different categories (technicians, engineers, scientists, and non-permanent members remaining more than one year in the unit) and 6 designated persons (the management team, the coordinator of the administrative management team and the coordinating agent for prevention). Staff representatives are elected with two-yearly renewal. There are also permanent invited members including the quality manager, the person in charge of logistics, and the referent of the Saclay project. Council members implement actions to improve the functioning of the unit. The council meets, at the initiative of the unit's management, every two months. The Unit Council is involved in drafting and validating the rules of procedure.
General Meetings (Assemblées générales -AGs)
General Meetings (AGs) open to all staff are held at least twice a year. The content and organization of the AGs is discussed by the Unit Council. In addition to the thematic AGs, organized according to specific needs, two AGs are systematically programmed: one AG at the end of the year, to cover the balance of ending-year activities and define the objectives for the next year, and a mid-term AG (in June), to update the status of planned actions and address current scientific and technical issues. Examples of the agendas of the last three AGs include milestones of the new unit project (June 2018); innovation at ECOSYS: from conception to completion (December 2017); positioning of the unit on non-food biomass; development of research quality assurance in the field; milestones of the Saclay project (HR and building facilities aspects). AGs are systematically coupled with a friendly unit lunch inviting all staff (permanent and non-permanent).
The disciplinary animation is supported by the scientific teams, taking different forms (seminars, exchange in projects, etc.). These team animations (especially for seminars or " cafés science ") are broadcast and open to the entire unit as well as other units of the Center in some cases. Inter-team animation structures have been created around transversal axes (thematic workshops, e.g., on pesticides; discussion groups for the preparation of projects, e.g., on "roots", “recycling” or "air contamination"). In parallel, annual ECOSYS Scientific Days are organized to put into perspective the progress of the unit project or to address a hot topic (for example, the last Scientific Days were organized around the launching of the Convergence Institute, CLAND, to evaluate how our cross-cutting activities (axes) were positioned in relation to the consideration of climate change). Other transversal actions are periodically carried out, such as Technical Days organized by the technical groups, Newcomers' Days (two annual sessions), targeted information operations (for example, a half day on “glyphosate”) and unit seminars. One specific operation to support the creation of ECOSYS was the organization of an Internal Research School on Functional Ecology (in the form of five half-day seminars by external persons, spread over 18 months). Another operation carried out over the course of a year was the organization of a series of popularized presentations of our activities, which were open to other units at the Grignon site.
